3 All-Natural Energy Drink Recipes

February 9, 2017

As you already know, in extreme heat conditions, when excessive sweating or when great physical effort is being exerted, it’s essential to ensure proper hydration. Even though filtered water remains undefeated in this field, some athletes may prefer flavoured beverages, such as energy drinks. In order to avoid the long list of more-or-less tempting ingredients on the back of commercial sports fluorescent drinks, let us introduce you to three simple and delicious recipes that are naturally refreshing!

Homemade rehydration

(recipe found on Fraîchement Pressé)

  • 3 ½ cups cold water
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt

Mix all the ingredients, then shake the bottle to dissolve the salt and there you go! You could reduce the sugar content (i.e. maple syrup) if it’s very hot outside, in order to maximize water.

The "Gatorade" way

(recipe found on Signé M)

  • Ice cubes, to taste
  • 90 ml (3 oz) Aloe juice
  • 90 ml (3 oz) pure unsweetened cranberry juice
  • 22 ml (3/4 oz) grapefruit juice
  • 22 ml (3/4 oz) maple syrup
  • A pinch of fine salt

Fill your bottle with ice cubes, pour all the ingredients into it, mix with a spoon and enjoy!

Gatorade-style homemade drink

100% natural version

(recipe found on Trucs et Bricolages)

  • 3 cups coconut water
  • 1 cup fresh or thawed strawberries
  • 1 cup cool water
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of honey

Combine all the ingredients in a blender and pour into your favourite Mason jar, without forgetting to fasten the lid tightly before putting it in your backpack!

Those homemade drinks have everything your body needs in physical effort, whether you’re a snowshoe hike or indoor training enthusiast. Maybe you know more magic potions? Let us know!
